Pet Day 2018
At Awahono school we had Pet Day and it was really fun. We had to make a slideshow with the three pieces of writing that we put in our pet projects. I brought a dog called Lucy to Pet Day and Tahlia brought dog called Quilla too. There were lots of pets at Pet Day like birds, rabbits, cats, guinea pigs, dogs, lambs, horses and fish. My favourite animals at Pet Day was the dogs because they were all so fluffy and cute. I did a slideshow with Tahlia and we both made an even amount of things on the slideshow. Here is Tahlia's and my slideshow about Pet Day.

Chair Decoration
Last week Mrs Ealam showed us a video about how to make a so last year chair into an so this year chair, using Modpodge glue that is non-toxic. They used the glue to put the colours and pictures from magazines on the chair. We used a different glue called P V A glue to stick the pictures and colours on and we used Modpodge glue to make sure nothing is going to fall off and if there is anything sticking out we can make sure it is flat again. First we had to put ourselves in groups of four so that we all work well together and some of us were just friends in one group. Then we had five minutes to figure out what our theme was going to be and ours was farming animals but then we couldn't find any cows in the magazines but we founds lots of hunting things so we decided that we were going to do hunting so we got guns and deer and other hunting things. We had to patch up the bottom, the back and the front of the chair but not the legs because there was nothing wrong with them and we had to make sure there was no brown wood showing and I think we did a pretty good job of that. At the end if you looked at the bottom it would look a bit messy but we couldn't help it because Mrs Elam said we only had about five minutes to finish and we hadn't even started the bottom of the chair. When we had to make sure everything was glued down we had to use the Modpodge glue to make sure that all of it was dry and not going to flick up but we could not put heaps of glue otherwise when it dried it would look like a snow wonderland. The next thing we could do better is to pick a theme so that when people would look at the chair straight away they would know the theme and maybe plan it out more before we stick things on. The one thing I really liked when I did it was that we were using teamwork and it was good that we all liked the same thing. Here is Zoe's, Haylee's, Tahlia's and my chair.

Character's Feeling Sentence
In the Spring holidays Awahono School had the descriptive sentence challenge. We had to find a sentence in our book that describes the character's feeling. I got a sentence from the book called Out Of My Mind by Sharon.M. Draper. It is about a girl who can't walk or talk and she finally get a chance to talk but not everyone is ready to hear her.

Collage
We were learning about plastic and how it kills the sea environment. We made a collage with ripped up pieces from OLD magazines! We drew our animals and then we had a choice of painting or using some pastels to colour our animals. I found that sticking the animals on our collage was hard and also starting off on putting the ripped magazines on.
On our collage we have stuck on a humpback whale, a tropical basking fish, a crayfish, a dolphin and two penguins. The colours that we used for the humpback whale were blue and black, the colour we used for the crayfish was orange, the colours we used for the tropical basking fish were yellow, orange, black, red, blue and green. The colours for the dolphin were light blue, dark blue and also black.
Our contents were the beach, the ocean and the sky. We also had an island, a cliff with a water, a sun and mountains. I think it was not hard but took a big period of time to get it finished. I liked making the collage and thought it was fun and also I liked how we had to collaborate in groups.

Plastic Bin Liners
In room five we had to make a document persuading our principal to ban plastic bin liners from our school. To be successful we had to organise our ideas in paragraphs with an introduction that explains why you are writing (what the problem is) and a position statement (what you believe), three main paragraphs, a conclusion and start each paragraph with a topic sentence, use words like: firstly, secondly, finally, in my opinion, I believe, strongly, firmly, should, must and, if... then. I think I am going well at writing persuasive texts and I will know what to do next time when I write some persuasive writing. I think I have included most of the things on the success criteria list. Here is my writing about plastic bin liners.
10th September 2018
Dear Mrs Wallace,
I’ve got to inform you about the problem that is happening in our school which is that plastic bin liners are being used too much at Awahono School. We are using two thousand each year at our school! I strongly believe that plastic bin liners must be removed from our school. Do we really need them at Awahono School? Here are my three good reasons about why plastic bin liners should be not be allowed and taken away from our school.
First of all, we only put dry materials in our classroom bins. For example, our class only puts paper and pencil sharpenings in our bin and those things do not produce any liquid after a few days in the plastic bin liner. We already have a a bin that carries scraps for our chickens. Sometimes people just put a plastic wrapper in the classroom bin which is perfectly alright because they do not let off any odour or liquid out. I firmly believe that our school must not use plastic bin liners because we only put dry materials in them.
Secondly, the plastic bin liners are polluting the Earth. If our school makes a little change we are not going to pollute the Earth and the sea animals will not be surrounded by plastic as much as they are right now. Our plastic bin liners only get used once a day and they all go to a landfill and are not recyclable. Our school must not use bin liners because they are polluting the Earth and if we keep going on like this lots of animals will die.
Thirdly, our school can save money and buy important things if we don’t use plastic bin liners. We can buy better things like new sports gear, flash kapa haka costumes and a new sports shed window. If we keep buying plastic bin liners our school will be poor and we will have to find more money. We don’t want that, do we? If we don’t use plastic bin liners our school will not run out of extra vests and medical things. When the school uses plastic bin liners it is like when you lose something and can’t get it back and at the moment we are losing money and not getting it back.
In conclusion, all of the classes mostly puts dry materials in the plastic bin liners, they are also polluting the Earth and I we are throwing away money too. I hope that you will consider banning plastic bin liners from our school.
Yours sincerely,
Sophie

Double Number Lines
In my maths group we are learning how to use double number lines to find a fraction of a number. We had to make a slideshow with three problems in it that involve a double number line, an example and an introduction. I think I am doing good with using double number lines but sometimes I forget that I can't halve odd numbers. Here is my slideshow about double number lines

El Gregoe
Today El Gregoe the magician and ventriloquist, came to Awahono school. He did tricks like putting his hand through a mirror and bringing a long ladder out of his small suitcase. El Gregoe came to our school to tell us about bullying and there were five words about how to ignore a bully and how to stand up to them. They were respect, trustworthy, helpful, responsible and caring. All of the words were put on the long ladder. There was also a word that was about how to stand up to a bully, which was the word WITS. The W stands for walk away, the I stands for ignore, T stands for talk to someone and S stands for stop. My favourite magic trick was the one when he blew up a balloon and popped it and a dove came out. I learned about the five words for how to stand up against bullies and I learned about what the letters in WITS stand for. El Gregoe did lots of cool illusions and here are a two pictures of the El Gregoe visit.

Name that Shape
In class we have been learning about lots of different two dimensional shapes. In our Screencastify we had to say how many sides the shape had, what kinds of angles the shape had, how many equal sides, if it has parallel sides and the name of the shape. I chose a rhombus and Mackley described a square. Here is Mackley's and my Screencastify.
Trapped
In Room 5 we are learning how to describe. We had to describe a picture with a turtle in it and what we think will happen next. Our success criteria was to use present tense, use adjectives that describe the turtle and extend our sentences by using more detail. We also had a challenge which was to begin each sentence in a different way. I think I have used all of the things in the success criteria and in the challenge. This piece of writing was about how plastic polluting the ocean and what it does to sea animals. Here is my writing called Trapped.
Sadness sweeps over me as I spot a limey green turtle tangled up in an angry slimy green fishing net. What can I do? What can I do? The words keep repeating in my mind as I stomp around on the golden sand.
Sadness sweeps over me as I spot a limey green turtle tangled up in an angry slimy green fishing net. What can I do? What can I do? The words keep repeating in my mind as I stomp around on the golden sand.
The nightmare keeps scaring me as I go back to when I was picked up by a fisherman and thrown into the gigantic boat with a enormous fishing net. It was a stormy night last night and the boat kept swinging on the rocky oceans waves. I remember when the boat started to hover into the ocean waters and everyone screamed at the top of their lungs trying to get help. But it was too late the boat was already under water and I was pretty happy to go back home but then a swampy green thing came and it tried to kill me. The creature keeps me in its stringy claws and now I am on the side of a beach.
As I stop daydreaming there is another person with brown trousers and a blue t-shirt standing by my side with a sharp metal thing. It keeps coming closer and closer and I keep getting more anxious. Then there was a snap and I could feel my fins again! YAY! Wait, how am I going to go back home? Something is tickling me. I can see everything from up here! I am the king of the world! I came in like a wrecking ball! Splash! That was me doing a belly flop into the water. Before I leave I give my rescuers a toothy smile and turtle paddle away.
There are thousands of little bits of plastic in the sea and lots turtles like me get tangled up in it. As I swim back into the ocean I spot lots of plastic bottles and lots of other plastic things. I am now scared of what is going to happen to my home. Will all of my family die because of all of the littering by humans? Or will it stop? Nobody knows what will happen in the sea because it is all up to the people on land to make the decision.

Plastic Avalanche
In Room 5 we are learning how to describe a moment in time. We had to look at a picture and write what was in it. Our writing topic was plastic. We had to imagine we are one of the people in the picture. Our success criteria was to write in present tense, use my senses, sights, sounds, sensations, feelings and smells and to extend my sentence by adding more detail. I think I have done all of the things in the success criteria. Here is my plastic writing.
Green and white bottles are piling onto each other in a mountain and the petrol smell is conquering the air. The day is passing by and I feel determined, as if I am racing against time to get all of this plastic into piles. Will this ever end? “Stop daydreaming Milly,” shouts Mother. Dust rams into my eyes as a jeep rolls over the bridge. The crunching sound of my feet stumbling over the rubbish mixed with mud is taking over my ears. The large, dirty white crinkled sacks are under the towering bridge with a big variety of transparent bottles. I pick up a slimy green bottle and chuck it into the green basket and it bounces out back onto the mountain. I feel restless as I trudge over to the bottle and squeeze my anger into it.

******
Plastic is taking over the world! When it is 2033 the only thing that will be in the ocean will be plastic. We need to stop! I know some people forget to bring their bags into New World and have to use plastic bags but we are so much better than that! Plastic is everywhere! Some clothes are made out of plastic and some chairs are too! You know, Countdown is selling bags that are reusable and they are only one buck! Plus you can bring them back in if they are broken or ripped and get a new one for free! When you get coffee or tea at a cafe you need to bring your own cups in and then you are helping the planet. If we are doing little things alone we can do big things working together.
Sadness, anger, annoyance and confusion are all in my mind and I can’t get either one out. I know this is how we get food and water but isn’t there another way? Can’t we have a life without plastic or will it stay in our lives forever?

Jennifer Sommervell
On Tuesday the twenty eighth, Jennifer Sommervell came to Awahono School. The first books she wrote were true and she has written 3 - 4 books which are The Day My Dad Blew Up The Cowshed, Eel Hunt and The New Old Truck. Jennifer has two editors and one illustrator who is her sister. She told us when you write a book it is not perfect straight away. Jenny is working on a book right now that is about her uncle's stinky leg. She originally lived in Taranaki on a farm which was by a river where her family fished for eels. Jennifer Sommervell was not there when her family went fishing so she had to interview them about it. There were obstacles put in each book she wrote because it can't just go the characters way. Also there was actually eighteen people that went on the eel hunt but Jenny's sister did not want to draw that many people. Jennifer Sommervell helped me think in a different way because I always thought that I would get things perfect in the first go but I never did.

The Plastic Toy Shop
In class we have been learning how to describe what we can see in a picture. Our picture was of a plastic toy shop. The success criteria were to use interesting precise verbs and nouns, use my senses smell, feeling, sensation, doing, sight, sounds, use adjectives to describe people and things, use present tense and extend my sentences by adding detail. I think I have used all of success criteria There was also a challenge which was to hook the reader in at the start, begin each sentence in a different way and use similes, onomatopoeia and alliteration. I think I have hooked the reader in at the start and I have began each sentence in a different way but I did not use any similes, onomatopoeia or alliteration. So I need to use those things in my next describing the picture. Here is my describing the picture writing.
I creep through the plastic kingdom and feel disgusted as I spot all of the luminous coloured toys that are all kinds of different creatures. The sound of the employee clicking the keys as she types is annoying me.
Plastic is everywhere! The vivid colours are blinding me and the rubber smell is drowning into my nose. Sunset yellow ducks are one of the toys that are clustered together with lots of other neon creatures. Dark coloured cars with streaks of rainbow are lying on the packed shelves along with a variety of long shotguns with lots of accessories. I feel like I am drowning down deep into the waters of an ocean full of plastic.
People buy a toy, play with it and they just throw away, either because they are cheap or because they are broken. The anger in me is growing as I think about what is going to happen to all of these toys. Will they go into a landfill? Or into shallow waters of a beach? All I know is that none of these things are recyclable. What emotion should I have? Should I be sad because lots of sea animals might die. Or be angry because people are using too much plastic. I am starting to change my mind about going swimming in the ocean today because I might come face to face with a whole lot of plastic.

Symmetry
In maths room 5 has been learning about symmetry. Line symmetry is when the two sides of a shape are the same size and make a straight line in the middle of the shape. First we had to get a square piece of paper and fold it corner to corner. Then we drew a shape with a ruler and straight lines and then cut it out. After that we had to unfold the shapes and draw a line in the middle of them and stick it onto a piece of black paper. We had to make three sided shapes, four sided shapes and shapes that have more than four sides. Here is my line symmetry work.

Dear Dumb Diary
In reading we had to make a book review. The success criteria was you have to have your title and author, the type of story it is, what the book is about, something interesting about the main characters, the setting for the story, the main problem in the book, what I like about the book and why and your favourite part. Here is my slideshow.
Reading Profile Term 3
In reading everyone had to make a reading profile. In a reading profile you have to write what book you have recently been reading, a book somebody recommended for me, a new author that I have tried and enjoyed, my favourite series at the moment, how I went with my term 2 reading goals and your goals for term 3. I how I have included all of the things I need in a reading profile. Here is my reading profile term 3.

Fraction Art
In room 5 we have been learning how to make fraction art. There were halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths. First we had to get three different coloured pieces of paper. After that we had to draw circles around foam circles and then cut them out. Then we had to fold the circles into halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths and cut them all out. Last of all, we had to make sea creatures out of all the fractions and put them onto blue paper. In my drawing I normally used halves for the body. My turtle is made out of one half and four eighths. I think the task was not that hard but took a bit of time to finish. Here is my Fraction Art.

Another Place Another Time
Room 5 has been learning how to structure a narrative using adverbs of place and time. Ours was based on the picture called Another Place, Another Time. We had to write a story about what was happening in the picture and make an ending to it. Here is my Another Place, Another Time writing.
THE RAILWAY TRACK TO THE ISLAND OF KINGS
It was a dark and gloomy night and dark brown, angry clouds were circling the wrinkled up sea. Suzy suddenly spotted something in the distance, “Yes, yes we are near land,” whispered Suzy. They could all see it now, they had noticed a thing on the island that made them feel envious inside. Suzy, Jack, Alex and Rose could see a white crumbled castle that looked like there was gloomy light flickering on and off. The closer and closer they came to the island the more scared and nervous Suzy, Jack, Alex and Rose got.

What Is Red
We are learning how to use images to create a poem. We had to pick a colour to describe. Haylee and I picked red to describe. Here is our poem
What is RED?
Red is spicy hot radish,
Dark red, bright red, light red, any red.
Red is blood from a vampires teeth. A rooster creeping through the yard. Ripped up red paper. Crumbly crunching leaves. A rose, red, ripe, apple tumbling. Red is the sound of devil’s calling. A raspberry yum yum. Red is mouthwatering, hot, red peppers. Squishy sweet tomatoes. A colour from a rainbow. Red is one of the most dramatic colours. My face goes red when I am angry. Red is thunder and the lightning. Red is my heart.

Angles
We have been learning about angles. We made our own angles out of card. First we had to get a orange, black and white piece of card and then we had to cut the white piece of paper into a circle. Then we had to put the white circle onto the orange piece of card then cut around the white circle. After that we had stick the orange and white piece of paper together. Then we had to put the white and orange circle onto the black card and draw around the circle. After that we had to cut it out and put it together with the other circle but not glue it, and cut it to the middle, then put it all together and that's your angle done.
Alliteration Poem
In writing we have been learning how to write an Alliteration Poem. We had to make an Alliteration Poem using the letter m. Here is my writing.
MR MEE MEE
Mr Mee Mee tripped over
Marco the mouse into the mud.
“Mommy mommy I’m so muddy,”
muttered Mr Mee Mee.
Mommy marched away
from making moody mushroom soup
to go and find out why Mr Mee Mee muttered.
Mommy moved slowly
as she marched
moving towards Mr Mee Mee.
Muffin Man and Mommy
both tried moving Mr Mee Mee
but they fell into the mud too.
They are all muddy munchkins.

Hunting and Fishing
On the first of April Ahaura had the Hunting and Fishing Competition. Hunting and Fishing is for people who like to hunt pests, for example a deer. When people hunt pests it helps farmers grow more grass and it helps the environment. Room 5 had to write what it was like to be there in present tense. We had to look at lots of pictures of things at the Hunting and Fishing, so people wouldn't forget what kind of animals were there. Here is my writing
Hunting and Fishing
Creeping through the crowd, I wonder what all of the people are looking at. As I get to the front I can see a mixture of boars, deer, and red deer all hanging on the side of big blue truck. I feel so grossed out as I walk away from the dead animals. The smell of the dead chamois keeps chasing me. It smells like a wasp nest that got sprayed with diesel.
The prickly pointy grass feels really sharp under my feet as I scamper towards the big grey trailer. When I get to the trailer I spot lots of dead hares, magpies and goats. They all have lots of dry red blood on their bodies and the dead animals smell like a mouse with maggots all over it.
When I look at the deer, I think it is a waste of good meat because people have to cut open the stomachs and all the flies are on the dead animals. There are lots of big deer, boar and other dead animals at the Hunting and Fishing, and it is a really fun event.

Swimming
In Room 5 we are learning how to describe in present tense. We described what it was like when we swam against other people, in races at the school swimming pool. This is my piece of writing.
Swimming Race
Beeeeep! Splosh! I dive into the pool. I zoom through the cold water bobbing my head up and down. Energetic at the start, but now I’m puffed in the middle, I am trying to go my hardest to win, now nearly at the end here we go. ”Whack ow!” I just hit my head really badly on the wall. “Yay! I’m first.” The crowds are all calling my name, “ Sophie Sophie, you’re amazing!” In a kind of roaring sound.
I am really scared that in my next race, backstroke I will cut my foot on the sharp red and blue lane rope. I’m waiting in the queue to go and start backstroke. My group is in the pool, I am getting ready by clinging my arms to the wall and my knees nearly touching my chin. “Ready!Set!Go!” The race is on, the chlorinated bitter water is getting all into my mouth. All of this transparent water is making me thirsty. I am splashing around in the pool determined to get first in the race.
The pool starts to get shallow and I can touch the bottom. “Why did somebody’s hand just touch my head?” When I turn around there is a lady with golden short hair with a timer right in front of me. I climb out of the pool and sit on the wet, but warm bench with my fluffy pink towel around me.

Snowboarding
Room 5 is learning how to describe how a person was feeling and thinking but without it being you in writing. We are writing about Zoi Zadowski-Synott who was a Kiwi snowboarder in the Winter Olympics this year. My class had to write the description in present tense. This is my writing.
Snowboarding
Zoi is racing down the hill going as fast as a lightning bolt. The cold chunky snow is getting all in her mouth as she zooms down the huge hill. She feels very excited and scared because she might fail by falling onto the clean white snow. Here she goes! Up, up and away. Zoi is up in the clear crisp sky and she is flinging her head backwards to start her double somersault. She is getting a bit dizzy now and she has only finished her first somersault. Flinging her body backwards to start the second somersault, Zoi starts to worry about her landing again. She is about touch the snow, scared that she will fall over. “She made the landing! Woohoo!” The crowd shrieks. Zoi slides down the hill and skids so that she gets snow on everyone. “ Zoi has won a bronze in the Winter Olympics,” calls the Judge. On Thursday Room 5 and the year 4's had to bring our bikes to school because Constable Joss was coming. Constable Joss came to our school to tell us about safe cycling. Room 5 had to describe what we did in present tense. This my writing.
Cycling
It feels like I’ve been waiting forever, and finally this queue is moving. I’m going up the jump, will I make it or will I fall off the monster sized ramp? I am so scared. “Weee that is really fun.” I laugh as I make the jump.
There are lots of obstacles, some go up and down and some are really bumpy. The brown rickety ladder is the most fun because I go up and down. It is really exciting going up the ramp because I go really fast.
The sound is banging into my ears, because both of the planks are slamming onto the hard rock concrete. Everybody is squeaking their bells, and all different sounds came out, it was like they are all in a band.
I think the cycling is really fun and helpful. The obstacles are the most fun and the queue is quite slow. I think the cycling is the most fun I’ve had at school.

Summer Poem
In Room 5 we are learning how to write a poem. First we had to look at a summer poem by Marci Ridlon, after that we had to think about what we did in summer and put it in the poem. Here is my summer poem.
Summer Poem
Remember that time
Remember that time
Summer Poem
Remember that time
when you lay down
on the hot, greasy sand
while everyone played in the water?
Remember how
you ate your
dripping brown chocolate ice cream
and it was getting all over your clothes
and it was delicious?
That was summer.
Remember that time
when you devoured
fish and chips outside the shop
and you tried to finish it all
but you just couldn’t?
Remember how
the rough blue sea water tasted
very salty but nice
and you had to try and cough it out?
That was summer
Remember that time
when you watched
the fast flowing light blue
waterfall water crashed into the rocks
and it was beautiful? Remember how
the daisys in the backyard
swayed from to side to side
as you lay there on the soft grass?
That was summer

The Bellbird
Room 5 have been learning about how to describe and we described the bellbird. We had to describe what the bell bird looked like.
The Bellbird
Today Solly and Miro brought a dead bellbird to school, which had got stuck in the radiator belonging to the van, when they were driving to school. The bellbird’s Maori name is “ Korimako” and the sound it makes is beautiful.
The bellbird has light grey and olive green feathers on its back and on the bellbird’s head, wings and tail it is all dark grey. Also the length is roughly 16-20 centimetres. It has a curved grey beak and the beak has blood coming out of it. Finally, the bellbird’s feathers are very soft like a teddy’s fur.
The bellbird is lifeless and its heart has stopped. We are going to bury it down into the ground were it can reconnect with nature.
It was very sad that the bellbird died.

How Many Jumps in a Minute
Room 5 has been learning about Statistical Investigation. In class we had to jump up and down for a minute. After that we had to make a stem and leaf graph to show how many jumps we could do in a minute. I was very puffed after we jumped for a minute. Here is a drawing about my Statistical Investigation.
