Jennifer Sommervell

On Tuesday the twenty eighth, Jennifer Sommervell came to Awahono School. The first books she wrote were true and she has written 3 - 4 books which are The Day My Dad Blew Up The Cowshed, Eel Hunt and The New Old Truck. Jennifer has two editors and one illustrator who is her sister. She told us when you write a book it is not perfect straight away. Jenny is working on a book right now that is about her uncle's stinky leg. She originally lived in Taranaki on a farm which was by a river where her family fished for eels. Jennifer Sommervell was not there when her family went fishing so she had to interview them about it. There were obstacles put in each book she wrote because it can't just go the characters way. Also there was actually eighteen people that went on the eel hunt but Jenny's sister did not want to draw that many people. Jennifer Sommervell helped me think in a different way because I always thought that I would get things perfect in the first go but I never did.

  1. Hi Sophie, it's good to hear that you've realised that even experienced, published writers always have to work on their books to improve them. You'd have to be determined to keep working at the book every day for months. I thought it was interesting when Jennifer said that by the time one of her books was ready for publishing she'd "had a gutsful", which means she was absolutely sick of the book. She must have felt proud when it was published, though.
